SNAP OUT OF IT - ARCTIC MONKEYS 




The music video for Snap Out of It presents an exploration of love, obsession, and heartbreak. It features a woman obsessively watching footage of the Arctic Monkeys, particularly frontman Alex Turner, while descending into an emotional breakdown. Her actions— crying, erratic dancing, and immersing herself in nostalgic memories—contrast with the nonchalant and carefree tone of the band's recording session. This juxtaposition creates an ironic commentary on emotional vulnerability and detachment in relationships.


Representation of mental illness in the music video : 

This music video depicts themes of emotional instability and obsessive behavior, which are often associated with unprocessed grief or heartbreak. The protagonist's actions—repeatedly watching the band on TV, pacing in distress, and crying uncontrollably—highlight a fixation on a past relationship. Her inability to "snap out of it" aligns with the song's narrative, illustrating the struggles of moving on from unreciprocated love.

Her isolation is emphasised by the luxurious yet empty house, symbolising the hollow state of her emotional well-being. Through this heartbreak is represented as a form of emotional imprisonment. 


1. Mise-en-Scène

- The luxurious home contrasts with the protagonist's emotional fragility, symbolising how material wealth cannot provide comfort for inner turmoil.

- Symbolic elements, like the swimming pool and retro TV, reflect drowning in emotions and being stuck in the past.

2. Camera

- Close-up shots of the woman crying and her face illuminated by the TV screen draw attention to her vulnerability.

- The use of contrasting warm tones in the band's scenes versus cold, sterile lighting in her home underscores the emotional disconnection.

3. Editing

- The pacing mirrors the protagonist’s mental unraveling, with erratic edits aligning with her chaotic emotions.

- Rapid cuts between the band's lighthearted recording session and the woman's breakdown intensify the viewer's awareness of her fixation.

4. Sound 

- The upbeat tempo of the song ironically contrasts with the somber imagery, heightening the dissonance between her inner turmoil and the band's indifference.

- Natural sound elements, like the water splashing in the pool, add an eerie realism to her isolation.


Impact on the audience : 

The video leaves viewers with an unsettling sense of empathy for the protagonist. While her obsessive behavior is exaggerated, it reflects universal experiences of unreciprocated love and the difficulty of moving on. The stark contrast between her breakdown and the band's indifference creates a thought-provoking commentary on emotional disconnection in modern relationships.

Final Portfolio : Personal Contribution

Right from the beginning of this project, I took on most of the responsibilities. I was heading the production and was in charge of constructing most of the narrative. Firstly, I chose the song for the music video pitched the idea to Dua and Raaniya, after they both agreed, i got started on building up the plot. I wanted the storyline to have a twist and so i started brainstorming for ideas. After deciding when to film and deciding on a location to film, I made a group chat with 35 people. I sent a formal message on the group chat asking everyone who was available to join in and help me and my team out in this project. 15-17 people got back to me and confirmed that they'd be there. I then shortlisted everyone, and contacted one of my friends to rent their camera. I also rented a gimbal as well. Preliminary Task #1 : Music Video

  Our music video was on the song “Ikisvi Sadi” by ‘Biryani Brothers’, a Pakistani band formed by Natasha Noorani and Zahra Paracha in 2014. We chose this song as it’s a representation of Pakistani culture and language.  PLOT : The music video starts of with the actor, Muhjah (me) singing along to the lyrics, explaining how she feels like nobody understands her. There’s shots of me completely alone in a room, laying down on a sofa, looking out the window and sitting on a chair. Then we introduced the other character, Dua, who is basically my hallucination. Raaniya plays the roll of my mother. We show her scolding me and trying to explain something to me.
