Camera techniques in music videos

 Music Videos contain many different kinds of camera angles and camera shots which contribute to the different themes explored in a music video. They also contribute to conveying the mood and story of the music video.

Camera Shots in Music Videos : 

  • Extreme Close-Up (ECU): Focuses on small details (e.g., eyes, lips, hands). Enhances emotional intensity or highlights key visual elements.

  • Close-Up (CU): Frames the subject's face or an object. Captures emotions or emphasizes lyrics/melody.

  • Medium Shot (MS): Shows the subject from the waist up. Balances focus on expressions and body language.

  • Long Shot (LS): Captures the full subject from head to toe. Highlights the subject within the environment.

  • Extreme Long Shot (ELS): Shows the subject at a great distance. Used for dramatic openings or to establish scale.

  • Over-the-Shoulder Shot: Frames the scene from behind a subject's shoulder. Often used for interactions or point-of-view storytelling.

  • Tracking/Dolly Shot: Camera moves with the subject. Creates dynamic movement and immerses viewers in the action.

  • Handheld Shot: Shaky, unsteady movement. Creates a raw, intimate, or chaotic feel.

  • Low Angle Shot: Shoots the subject from below. Conveys power, dominance, or importance.

  • Bird’s Eye View (Overhead Shot): Directly above the subject. Offers a unique, abstract perspective.

  • Dutch Angle (Tilted Shot): Camera is tilted. Adds unease, tension, or a surreal tone.

  • Pan: Camera moves horizontally. Used for revealing settings or following movement.

  • Zoom: Adjusts lens to focus in or out. Highlights details or shifts attention.

  • Wide Shot (WS): Frames a subject and much of the surrounding environment. Often used to set context or mood.

  • Two-Shot: Frames two subjects. Shows relationships or interactions.

  • Point-of-View (POV) Shot: Mimics what a character sees. Engages the audience in the character's perspective.

  • Overhead Drone Shot: A modern technique using drones for wide, sweeping shots of landscapes or urban environments. Adds grandeur or modernity.
