Preliminary Task #1 : Music Video
PLOT : The music video starts of with the actor, Muhjah (me) singing along to the lyrics, explaining how she feels like nobody understands her. There’s shots of me completely alone in a room, laying down on a sofa, looking out the window and sitting on a chair. Then we introduced the other character, Dua, who is basically my hallucination. Raaniya plays the roll of my mother. We show her scolding me and trying to explain something to me. The basic idea of this music video is my character has a mental illness, therefore, feels like nobody understands her, except for her hallucination.
CAMERA :
- high angle shot : The music video starts off with a high angle pan shot. The camera pans from the right side of the room, horizontally, to the left. It then features me lying down on a sofa singing along to the lyrics.
- still shot : The next shot shows the camera completely still, while I walk into the frame. We decided to film this shot with a window, as the dialogue matches with the actions being displayed in this shot. The lyrics are basically asking “what am i trying to find in this world?”, so me looking out the window, at the ‘outside world’, and turning back to the camera matches the meaning of the lyrics.
- zoom in : Once again the camera remains still in one position. The shot follows me looking into the camera, walking towards a chair and sitting down whilst reciting the lyrics. While I walk towards the chair and sit down, there is a slow zoom in on me. This further emphasises the lyrics. The next shot is linked to this one. It shows me from the side, and now there is someone next to me, who wasn’t previously there in the previous shot. This is the introduction of my character’s ‘hallucination’, who is played by Dua. There is once again a zoom in on Dua. This is significant as it fully introduces her and gets to audience to question who she is.
The next shot shows me sitting on a chair and Raaniya scolding me. It can be interpreted that she’s scolding me on something related to work, as she has a few sheets in her hands that she keeps referring to. During all this, I am simply looking into the lens, ignoring Raaniya, singing along to the lyrics. This reiterates the fact that the protagonist feels as though nobody understands her fully. There is then a fade into the next shot. This fade proves to be important as there was nobody sitting next to me while Raaniya was scolding me, but suddenly Raaniya’s disappeared from the shot, and Dua’s next to me. This also gives audiences a glimpse into the protagonist’s (my) mind, and how she blurs everybody out of her mind, except for her hallucination, who she thinks is the only person who understands her.
SETTING :
We shot this music video at our school, in the principle’s office. The location didn’t completely match what we had in mind, but since our schedule’s were packed and we had no where else to go, we decided to film at school.
The sofas and chairs created a ‘homey’ feel which is exactly what we were trying to capture. We needed to show the protagonist in her natural environment.
